Gladys Fox Moore Starnes Adkins, 91,
was born in Hickory on Feb. 12, 1917, to George Fox and Sarah Eckerd Fox.

She attended Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, where she earned her bachelor's degree to become a math teacher. She earned her master's degree from the University of Mississippi. Gladys taught math in N.C. public schools (also several years in Georgia public schools) until her retirement, after which she relocated to St. Petersburg, Fla. Gladys was a member of Viewmont Baptist Church in Hickory and Clearview Baptist Church in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Gladys is survived by five children, Dan Moore of Aledo, Texas, Dorothy Moore Fromel of Bend, Ore., Claude (Casey) Starnes Jr. of Charlotte, Mark Starnes of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Eric Starnes of Gainsville, Fla., and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gladys departed this life Oct. 3, 2008, in Bend, Ore. She is loved and missed by all.
