Marie Andral (1811-1879)
Sister St Peter

Marie Andral was one of 8 French speaking Ursuline Nuns from the Ursuline Convent of Beaulieu, France who joined three English speaking Nuns from the Ursuline Convent in Boulonge-sur-mer France and journeyed to St. Martin Ohio to become Foundresses of the Brown County Ursulines.

Marie Andral was born In 1811 and probably entered the Ursuline Convent in Bealiueu, about 1829 taking the Religious name of Sr. St. Pierre, later Anglicized to Sr. St. Peter. After appeals for nuns (as early as 1834) by Cincinnati Bishop John Baptist Purcell to French Cardinal de la Tour d'Auvergne, the Cardinal granted permission for eight nuns from Beaulieu and 3 from Boulonge-sur-mer to go to Ohio.

The Beaulieu nuns were described as "They are young; they are lively; entirely too young to be superior. They need a superior who can speak English". So, Sr. Julia Chatfield from the Boulonge-sur-mer convent was chosen as Superior .

In addition to Sr. St. Peter, the nuns from the Beaulieu convent were: Cecile (Sr. Martial) Soulier, Michelle (Sr. Bernard) Bouyon, Pauline (Sr. Stanslaus) Laurier, Marie (Sr. Augustine) Bouret, Adaline (Sr. Angela) Demota, Marie (Sr. Mary) Bonnet and Christine (Sr. Christine) Veyssierre. From Boulonge-sur-mer came Postulate Josephine Dunn from England, Novice Caroline (Sr. Hyacinthe) Eiffe from Ireland and Superior Julia (Sr. Julia of the Assumption) Chatfield from England.

The nuns departed from La Havre France on the ship ZURICH on 4 Mary 1845. Despite sea-sickness the French nuns spent much of the voyage learning English and arrived in New York on 3 Jun 1845.

Before their arrival al in New York they removed their Ursuline habits and veils and donned black dresses and poke bonnets. There were few nuns in the United States at that time and they changed their appearance to avoid drawing attention to themselves.

They then immediately traveled by steamboat to Philadelphia, then by stage to Baltimore, on to Washington and through the Maryland forests. They then travelled by rail to Cumberland, Maryland then by stage to Wheeling and then by steamboat down the Ohio River to Cincinnati. They briefly stayed in Cincinnati while Bishop Purcell made the decision to open the school and convent in St. Martin, Ohio.

They arrived in St. Martin in July 1845 and occupied a small brick building that Bishop Purcell had been using as a seminary. By October of that year they opened their school on the bank of Solomon's Run in St. Martin on land that was given to them by Bishop Purcell.

Most of the French nuns were unable to become proficient and English which prevented them from teaching. They served the convent and school by performing housework, cooking, laundering and tailoring.
