1st Lieut. 1st Cavalry. California Volunteers. Aged 25 years, 5 months.
Samuel Howard Allyne enlisted as a private at San Francisco, California, August 14, 1861, and was mustered into Company E, 1st California Cavalry, at the Presidio of San Francisco on August 15. Private Allyne accompanied the California Column to New Mexico Territory to drive the Confederates back into Texas. He was discharged for promotion April 27, 1863, and commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Company A, 1st California Cavalry. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant November 4, 1863. Lieutenant Allyne was murdered at San Elizario, Texas, on December 29, 1863, by Private Robert Keer, also of Company A. His remains were returned here for burial.
