Josefa raised twelve children, including my grandmother, Josefina Martinez Torres, mostly by herself while her husband, Librado, was away working or serving in the Civil War. After the war she received a pension and we believe it was with that money that she bought 40 acres of land with a small river running through it right there at Gallina in the little valley below the cemetery where she is buried. She divided the land among her daughters when she was old. My grandmother received a portion just below the cemtery and my mother remembers on a Halloween some of the older boys lit lights at the cemetery to scare the little ones. My grandmother called her land "la tierra piedra" her stony land.
