James Henry Armstrong, known professionally as Harry J. Armstrong, graduated from St. Mary's College in Wilmington, Delaware. He began his stage career with White & Peyton's minstrels in 1864 during the Civil War, and also played on stages around Philadelphia. He was a circus clown from 1867 to 1869 with O'Brien's and the Keystone State shows. Mr. Armstrong made his New York debut with Emerson's minstrels and the Olympic. His last appearance on stage was in an old timers' act, 'The Jolly Corks.' He died following a long illness.
