John Rosenberger was a private in the 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company B, during the Civil War. He was captured at the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou on December 29, 1862, held prisoner and eventually paroled. He is believed to have been held captive by the Confederates on the Pearl River "prison bridge", near Jackson, Mississippi. At some point during his captivity he contracted disease. Upon parole he was returned to U.S. forces at New Orleans and placed on board the ship Underwriter which transported paroled prisoners back to Annapolis, Maryland. Pvt. Rosenberger died from his disease on board the ship and was buried at sea on April 20, 1863.
