David was born to Alvin and Narvell Newberry Altom in Bald Knob, AR on May 15, 1940.
David graduated from Malvern High School in May 1958 and joined the United States Army that same year. His tour of duty was from 1958 to 1962 with the 82nd Airborne Division and spent three years in Germany. He had stayed in touch with many of his Army buddies and had just had his third reunion with several of them.
After he was discharged from the Army he was employed with International Paper Company in Pine Bluff, and he, his wife and daughter moved to Star City in September 1962
David is preceded in death by his father, mother and one sister, Mary Ann Collins of Malvern.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Reba Hancock Altom, one son, Russell Altom, one daughter, Pam Sullivan (Oliver), one granddaughter, Lezleigh Knight (Joey), three grandsons, Chad McGriff, Zach Altom and Jacob Breeding, two great grandchildren, Asher and Adilyn Knight, and one step granddaughter Bailey Sullivan, all of Star City, three sisters, Barbara Cranford (Clifford) of Benton, Rita Tobias of Vancouver, Washington, and Kathleen Letini of Donaldson, AR, one brother-in-law, Hershell Hancock (Margaret) of Sheridan, and one sister-in-law, Barbara Mays (Wayne) of Siloam Springs, AR, along with several nieces and nephews.
Graveside Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Yorktown.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday at Griffin Funeral Service in Star City.
Pallbearers will be Chad McGriff, Zach Altom, Jacob Breeding, Lance Gasaway, Starsky Weast, Douglas Patrick, Malvin Ray Moore and Jim Bussey.
