Charles Henry Crist was born on August 26, 1858. After his mother's death, he lived and worked in different home in the Derby neighborhood for a year, then went to Kansas. There he learned the stone-cutting trade and was employed in numerous cities throughout the West, in the building of courthouses, railroad bridges and stations, and other public structures.
In 1889 he returned to Iowa for a visit, and after four more years in the West, he again came back to Woodburn, and on September 6, 1893, was married to Mabel Newsome. Mabel was born December 9, 1873, at Woodburn, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Murphy) Newsome. After their marriage, they farmed until the last ten years of his life, when they lived in Woodburn. They had five children. Charles died on March 31, 1947, and Mabel died on May 1, 1974. Mabel had made her home with her daughter and husband, Florence and Morris Keeney, near Prairie City after Charles' death.
Their children were: Howard Benjamin, Charles Francis, Louis Grafton, Paul Everett, and Florence Mabel.
