CHARLOTTEVILLE, NY John Stephen Ackerley ("The Mayor,") 71, passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Born Feb. 14, 1933, in the town of Kortright, the son of Hugh and Esther (Hillis) Ackerley.

He married Doris Brownell on May 12, 1950.

John served in the Army and received the OCC Medal in Germany, the Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

He lived in Charlotteville for most of his life. He was an active member of the Charlotteville Fire Department for over 50 years. While in the department he held the office of Chief and Assistant Chief for a number of years. He received many certifications for fire training courses. John was also a Fire Commissioner for many years, and served in other fire department organizations.

In addition to the fire department, he was a member of the Summit Grange, involved in Cub Scouts as a Scout Leader, and in Little League as a coach and umpired numerous games.

John worked for a number of years at General Electric. He was a plumber, electrician and repaired furnaces. He was involved in the Postal Service for many years as a Rural Carrier, Post Office Clerk and retired as Postmaster for the Charlotteville P.O. in 1992.

John was a kind, caring person who rarely had a harsh word against anyone. He did so much for so many people over the years.

He leaves behind his mother, Esther of Stamford; his wife, Doris; three children, Dennis of Oneonta, Jill Fyfe of Davenport Center, and Jodi Clapper of Charlotteville, and a foster daughter, Paula Morrell of Franklin; three grandchildren, Steven Fyfe of Davenport Center, Shawna Fyfe of Charlotteville and Hunter Clapper of Charlotteville and four foster grandchildren, Waylon, Danielle, Wyatt and Alison Morrell, all of Franklin; two great-grandchildren, Brea and Victoria Fairbairn-Fyfe of Davenport Center; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Hugh; and his sister, Marie Churchill.

John leaves behind not only his family but many friends and associates. He touched the lives of so many people, not only in his community but throughout the surrounding area. He was well liked and loved by many and will be sorely missed.

Friends may call Friday, March 5, 2004, from 2 to 8 p.m., at the Charlotteville Fire Station. A military ceremonial presentation of the United States Flag will be held at the fire station at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the Charlotteville Fire Station on Saturday, March 6, 2004, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle officiating. Interment will follow in the Charlotteville Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.
