Birth: 1841
Washington County
Arkansas, USA
Death: Jan. 8, 1861
Red River County
Texas, USA

Robert joined the Texas 9th Infantry at the same time as his brothers Joseph and John. They all enlisted in Co. E on 26 Sept. 1861 at Sanders Creek, Lamar County commanded by Gen. Samuel Bell Maxey.

Robert's young life was carelessly ended at the age of 20 just a week or so after his completion of basic training when the Texas 9th began marching from Lamar County to Arkansas. This event took place at Sibley, near Clarkesville, in neighboring Red River County.

John Kennedy Street in his letters to his wife which were published 150 years later by his great great granddaughter, Julie Williams Coley, as J.K. Street Civil War Letters, 9th Texas Infantry from Paris, Lamar County, Texas, 2009: 4,
tells us what happened.

"P.S. Jan 9th Thursday morning - A sad affair took place last night one of the guards set a loaded shot gun down by a tree and someone passing accidentally struck his foot against it and threw it down when it went off and the balls passed threw one of Capt Hills tents and killed one of his men. Bob Baker son of old Uncle Joe Baker."
