Sophia was the daughter of Prussian immigrants, Christian and Maria Bitzhoefer. They arrived in the US on 26 Apr 1852. She married Thomas J Ferguson on 10 Mar 1873 in Pettis County, Missouri. They had five children: Mary Belle, America Lee, Sarah, Henry, and Lula Francis. Sarah (1877-1958) and Henry 1879-1957) appear only on the 1880 census. The 1900 and 1910 census lists Sophia as the mother of 7 children, 6 living.

Thomas passed away, probably in the late 1890s (unconfirmed.) He was a house carpenter and farmer. He served in the Civil War in Co. B, First Missouri State Militia Cavalry.

Sophia married Christian Berkenbile on 15 Oct 1894 in Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri. Christian was widowed and had five children when they married: Mary Lucinda (1873-1952), Lilly (1878-?), Catherine Christine (1880-1966), John Wesley (1887-?), Andrew Lincoln (1889-1978). Together, Sophia and Christian had Lawrence Wilburn Berkenbile (1895-1967).
