Friedrich married Maria Louise Rade on May 13, 1853 in St. Louis. They lived in Washington, Missouri. In 1860 the family moved to St. Louis where Fred owned a brick smelter. At the start of the Civil War they were forced by Federal troops to move from St. Louis. In 1870 they relocated to Raymond, Montgomery, Illinois. Here, he began another brick making business and was employed in that occupation until his death.
