Emery Roth
Birth: Jul. 17, 1871, Hungary
Death: Aug. 20, 1948
New York County (Manhattan)
New York, USA

Architect. He designed many definitive New York City hotels and apartment buildings from 1920-30s using Beaux-Arts and Art Deco details. His sons continued the family enterprise, expanding the firm under the name Emery Roth & Sons. Born in the small town of Gálszécs, Zemplén County, Hungary (now Slovakia) in 1871, one of eight children. His family was relatively prosperous. but lost everything when his father died in 1884. The 13-year old Emery left home for Chicago where he was hired by Burnham & Root as an architectural draftsman for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. Relocating to New York, Roth worked for Richard Morris Hunt, but after Hunt died in 1895 he joined Ogden Codman Jr., an interior decorator with a large, rich clientele. In 1898 Roth started his own firm. Author Steven Ruttenbaum's 'Mansions in the Cloud: The Skyscraper Palazzi of Emery Roth' (1986), is the best book on Roth. His most memorable creations include the San Remo, Beresford, Eldorado, Ardsley and Normandy- New York City landmarks. (bio by: RR)
