Ella Welling was born to Harm and Dena Roossien. Their family home was on their farm located on Ferry Street in Grand Haven, Michigan.
Ella met John Welling while attending the First Reformed Church in Grand Haven. They wed and set up housekeeping in Spring Lake, Michigan. Soon the first of three daughters was born - Marie Welling, 1900 - 1912.
Jacob, John's brother relocated to Grand Haven from N. Holland and the two bought land next to each other between Fulton Street and the Grand River where they set up celery farms. They also built family homes next door to each other on Fulton and John and Ella moved to Grand Haven. Shortly after, daughter Berdean was born in November of 1911, Marie passed away of a heart defect in 1912. Daughter Marian joined the family a few years later and completed the family.
Many happy childhood memories of their grandchildren were spent in John and Ella's home as Grandmother Ella assumed the role of caregiver when Berdean returned to teaching and Marian worked outside the home. Ella and John both lived out their lives in their home at 1225 Fulton Street.
