Henry Baker was one of five children born to William Baker and his first wife Catherine Hull of Frederick County, MD. He was only four years old when his mother was murdered by two family slaves in 1820. His father remarried in 1827 to Magdaline Greenwood, a cousin of his first wife Catherine Hull.
Young Henry worked in the tannery business (like his father and grandfather before him) with his brother Daniel in Buckeystown, MD.
In 1839 Henry married Rebecca Duvall and the following year bought a tannery business in Libertytown, MD where Henry and Rebecca lived for the next 38 years raising their family.
Though Henry's wife Rebecca gave birth to thirteen children only six, three boys and three girls, lived to adulthood. In 1846 Henry and Rebecca lost their entire family when their first five children, aged a few months to six years, died and were buried at the old Baker family cemetery.
Henry Baker was a staunch supporter of the Union during the Civil War and was said to argue vigorously with his brother Daniel about the abolition of slavery.
In 1878 Henry and his wife moved to Washington DC where he was in business with his son. In 1886 Henry and Rebecca moved to Baltimore where Henry Baker died a decade later.
Henry and wife Rebecca were originally buried in the Baker Family Cemetery (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=2432317), New Windsor, Frederick County, Maryland. Their son, John Edgar Baker (#97536214) moved them to Mount Olivet Cemetery.
