His father was George Boyer, a blacksmith (b.1817 NY); his mother was Irena Lombard (1820-1860). His father relocated from New York to Michigan after the death of his wife in April of 1860. She died from complications giving birth to her son, Ralph. The family appeared on the June 21st US census in Richfield, Genesse County, Michigan; and in October of the same year, George remarried to Ruth Mathews.

Pvt Boyer saw action in five engagements under Col. William M. Fenton: Hilton Head Island, SC. Nov 8, 1861, Coosaw Ferry, Port Royal, SC. Jan 1, 1862, Fort Pulaski, Cockspur Island, GA. Apr 1-12, 1862, Wilmington Island, GA. Apr 16, 1862, and James Island, SC. June 16, 1862 where he was KIA.

Daniel's body was not recovered by the Union forces. He was buried by CSA with 45 others in a mass grave at Fort Lamar, James Island Civil War Battlefield, James Island, Charleston County, South Carolina.
