Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home for Reece Cowan, 58, 2221 Market, who died in a Topeka hospital early Tuesday shortly after arrival Monday night. Shawnee County sheriff's officers said he suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Officers said the shooting followed an argument during which his ex-wife, Virgie Cowan, suffered a gunshot wound to her left arm. She was released after treatment early Tuesday at St. Francis Hospital.
Reece Cowan was born Sept 5, 1915, at Monticello, Ark. He served 21 years in the U.S. Army and later was employed by the Kansas State Highway Commission 15 years before he retired in 1971.
He had attended Highland Crest Baptist Church and was a member of Lafayette Lodge No. 16 AF&AM, at Manhattan.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Judy Darting, 8029 NW 35th; a son Jack Cowan, Monterey, Calif.; six sisters; Mrs. Hazel Crane, Fountain Hill, Ark., Mrs. Lois Grubbs, Lacey, Ark., Mrs. Scottie Jolley, Warren, Ark., Mrs. Mary Frances Moore, Mrs. DeMaris Britton, and Mrs. Betty W. Holliday, all of Memphis, Tenn., a brother, Daphene Cowan, Monticello, Ark.; and six grandchildren. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
