Ethel Bernice (Lewis) Anderson, 94, went to be with her Lord April 25, 2005, at Scott Depot, W.Va.
She had lived in Mason County all of her life until failing eyesight and other health problems made it necessary for her to live with her son and daughter-in-law in Pinopolis, S.C. In July 2003, further health problems made it necessary for her to enter the Regency Place Assisted Living Facility.
Born in Beech Hill, she was the daughter of the late Miles Clement Lewis and Naomi Catherine (Brannan) Lewis and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was a member of the Beech Hill United Methodist Church, where she served as church pianist, choir director, founder and director of the children's choir, Sunday School teacher, member of the official board, church historian, and was a member of the United Methodist Women. After moving to Point Pleasant in 1971, she and her husband started attending the Heights United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and taught various Sunday School classes, until for the last few years, she was the sole teacher of the Friendship class.
She was an educator, having been employed by the Mason County Board of Education progressing from teaching in a one-room school to teaching ninth grade English. She also served as both lead teacher and principal in an experimental program of teacher training sponsored by the Ford Foundation, Marshall University, and locally, by Walden F. Roush, Mason County superintendent of schools. She received both the bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees in education from Marshall University and was a charter member of Sigma Chapter, Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary International Sorority for Women educators. She also was an active member of Camp Conley CEOS Club as well as belonging to Mason County Teacher's Association where she served terms as both treasurer and president. She was a member of the West Virginia Education Association, and was a life member of the National Education Association.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Preston R. Anderson, who passed away Aug. 27, 1999, three sisters, Genevieve Lewis of Upper Flats, Mildred Roush of Camp Conley, and Hazel Lee of Point Pleasant, three brothers, J. Milton Lewis of Camp Conley, John Lewis of Beech Hill, and Robert Lewis of Camp Conley, and an infant nephew, Charles (Toddy) Lewis of Beech Hill.
