Stephen Matthew BROWN aka Mapp was born to John F. BROWN and Amanda CARLTON on November 14, 1890 in Paulding County GA. He married Bessie LEWIS. Children: Eva, Josephine, Pauline, and Claude.
Per articles published by The Cedartown Era, Mapp was fatally shot by members of a flying squadron during a strike at Aragon Mills in Aragon, Polk County, GA. Eighteen men were indicted, two tried and acquitted and the remaining 16 released on $500 bond. To date, no evidence has been found to suggest who his killer(s) were. The National Guard was called to resume and keep order. Textile strikes in the South were prominent during this period and often accompanied by violence. I have found Mapp's story in numerous publications across the United States at newspaperarchives.com and genealogybank.com.
Mapp's story is also recorded in a book written by Olin Jackson with collaboration from Mapp's nephew Wesley Brumbelow (former mayor of Aragon GA - now deceased) entitled "Moonshine, Murder and Mayhem in Georgia" but incorrectly records Mapp's name as "Russell Napp Brown". This name is not found on any census or vital record related to Mapp.
