Brown was born in New England, probably in Providence, and moved to Lexington, Kentucky with his family while he was still a child. He was named after his paternal grandmother, who was a member of the Brown family of Providence. His wife, Hannah nee Cook, died in Cincinnati on June 29, 1884. Their only known child was George C. Comstock, who died in Saverton, Missouri on June 28, 1845 at age 23.
