Fanny was from an old and prominent family in Lebanon, PA. The first Coleman in America was Robert Coleman from Ireland. He worked his way up from clerk to owning his own iron foundries. He was a friend of George Washington and supplied iron to the troops. His foundries made him Pennsylvania's first millionaire.

Fanny never married. She lived in Lebanon all her life where she was active in charities. She traveled frequently, usually to Europe but did go as far as China when she was 44.

She died in a Philadelphia hospital after a long illness.
