Mrs. M.A. Cox, Widow of J.C. Cox, Formerly of Upper Alton, Dies at Dayton, Ohio, and Will be Buried Here
Mrs. M.A. Cox, widow of J.C. Cox, formerly of Upper Alton, dead at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.T. Cathcart, at Dayton, Ohio, Wednesday and the body will arrive here for burial and the funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Upper Alton Methodist Church. Mrs. Cox was the mother of a talented family. Two of her sons, Frank and Eugene Cox are widely known as painters and have reputations extending over a greater part of the United States. They are scenic artists. All the children of the Cox family had artistic talent and it was not known where the talent came from. A number of years ago, when Mrs. Cox was well past sixty years she found herself possessed of a passion for painting and in gratifying it she painted some good pictures, much to the surprise of everyone who knew her and had never known her to manifest any tendency in that direction. This, to the mother, explained the secret of the artistic temperaments of her children.
Mrs. Cox was 74 years of age and is survived by seven children. She lived many years in Upper Alton and her husband formerly conducted the drug store at Second and Henry St., now conducted by Paul Bros. He leaves many good friends in Alton.
Mrs. Cox's children are Frank Cox of Chicago, Clark Cox of Houston, Texas, Eugene Cox of Chicago. Mrs. W.T. Carthcart of Dayton, Ohio, Mrs. Wm. F. Sinks of Paducah, Ky., Mrs. W.G. Bowman of Chicago and Mrs. H.G. Powell of Couer de Alene, Idaho.
