Edith Clair McAllister was born May 25, 1873 in Sedan, Kansas; the daughter of George and Mary Jane (Crosby) McAllister. As a young child she traveled by covered wagon to Camp Supply, Oklahoma where her father was commissary manager for Stith & Watkins, a ranch outfit. Her and her brother, Vern, attended Osage Mission School.
Later the McAllister family moved to Rico, Colorado; a mining camp where the father was manager and his wife cooked for miners. After completing this job, Mr. McAllister went to Arizona to locate work, and his wife and children moved to Kingston, Illinois.
That winter while Mr. McAllister was sitting in his bunk house, he was shot by an Indian.
When Edith was about 13, she went with her mother to visit friends, the Artleys' in Nebraska. Mrs. McAllister cooked for Mr. Artley and filed on a homestead nearby. They lived there about three years and later the mother went to Curtis, Nebraska to cook for cash at a hotel and Edith stayed alone at the homestead, while her brother, Vern, worked for Mr. Artley.
In 1887 when Edith was about 15, the family moved to Douglas, Wyoming. Mrs. McAllister brought a restaurant with money she borrowed on her homestead.
Edith met and married Harvey Allen who owned the livery stable and they were married when she was 16 years old, September 23, 1889 in Curtis, Nebraska and made their way by train and stage coach back to Wyoming.
Survivors included two sons, Harvey of Eugene, Oregon; Robert of Cripple Creek Colorado; and one daughter, Doris Allen of Los Angeles; 9 grandchildren including Allen Swan and Maizie Wilkinson of Douglas; and 16 great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1948 and a daughter, Verna Swan, died in Douglas in 1957.
