Josie Mae Anglin (Dessie's youngest sister) related this story to my mother. "My life drastically changed in 1904 when Dessie Pearl was injured in a carriage accident. She was eloping with a man that my father had refused to let her marry. He had killed a man in a duel. The carriage turned over and the man was killed, and Dessie was badly injured. She lived for five years as a bed-ridden invalid and during that time, my mother gradually turned more and more of the housekeeping, cooking, and laundering over to me (Josie Mae). By the time I was twelve, I was cooking for the entire family."
