Adron Lee Gardner, 68, passed away August 10, 2000 after a long illness. He was born October 17, 1931 in Oakland, Oklahoma. Adron taught social studies and coached cross-country and track in Grants, Laguna and Belen. He retired as Athletic Coordinator at Belen High School in 1988. He was twice named Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association in 1972 and 1981. He was preceded in death by his father Burt Gardner; mother, Grace Young Howell Gardner; and brothers, James Howell, Hoyt Howell and Don Gardner. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Edwina Chavez Gardner; his son, Adron Edward Gardner; his daughter, Elena Gardner; and his grandson, Jacob Gardner, all of Belen. He is also survived by brothers, Wayne Gardner of Wright City, OK and W.E. Howell of Madill, OK, and his sister, Ruth Mercaldo of North Carolina; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. He will be missed by the many students and athletes whose lives he touched in Grants, Laguna, and Belen. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 14, 10:00 a.m., at the First Baptist Church of Belen. Interment will follow at Terrace Grove Cemetery in Belen. Pallbearers will be Joe Garcia, Kevin Gregory, Phil Gregory, Salo Baca, Mike Sanchez, Emmett Hunt, Mike Stone and Tom Garcia.
