John was the son of James Arthur and Margaret White and was born in Fenwick, Ayrshire where his father was a horse dealer. By the time John was 13 years old his father had moved the family onto the Glenleitch farm at Fenwick, Ayrshire and was a farmer of 145 acres. Being next to the youngest of 10 children, John probably knew he would have to make his own way from early on. Shortly after his marriage to Mary Reid in 1880 they moved to the United States and settled in Huntsville, Polk County, Minnesota. However, after about 10 years he moved the family back to Scotland and lived at 159 Garngad Hill where he was employed as a Diaryman. Upon his decease at the age of 82, his occupation was listed as a retired Gardener.
