Norval E. Allen Norval "Bud" E. Allen, 84, a 22 year resident of Heritage Harbor, died Friday, Dec. 11th of Lung Cancer.
He was born Jan. 24, 1925, a fifth generation Washingtonian. While in school, he began playing saxophone, clarinet and flute professionally with a number of jazz bands in D.C. including the Busse Ellis touring dance band. He was drafted into Company C, 60th Infantry of the Ninth Division in 1944 as a replacement rifleman to Normandy several weeks after D-Day. He remained on the front line through the hedge rows of France and Belgium and at nineteen years old, he was wounded while under mortar fire in the Huertgen Forest of Germany. He received a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his service. Returning to the States in 1946, he finished high school and was the first member of his family to graduate from a University as a result of the G.I. Bill.
After working in Personnel Management for the State and Labor Departments of the Federal Government and in Annapolis at the Board of Education, he tended bar part time at the Annapolis Yacht Club. He enjoyed boating, tennis, skiing and travel and he was an avid golfer.
He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Isabel Liddy Allen, and his sister, Charlotte Daugherty of Maryland.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, one grandson, one niece and four nephews.
A Funeral Mass and Internment for Norval and his wife Isabel, was held at Arlington National Cemetery May 17, 2010.
