James Hale Bewley’s and Jennie McCord’s fifth child was named Joseph Hale (“Joe”) Bewley. He was born 01 Jan 1890 in Anderson, SC. He died after 1930. He was listed in the 1900 census in Augusta, GA (with name spelled Bewly) along with his older brother, William, and their parents, James and Jennie. On 05 Jun 1917, his WWI registration card was recorded showing his residence in Jacksonville, FL and showing him as single and of medium build, medium height, with grey eyes and brown hair. At that time, he was a railroad clerk with the Georgia Railroad. He was listed in the 1930 census in New York City with wife Norma, aged 40, and daughter Elizabeth, aged 23 months. Joe and Norma were each recorded as having been 31 at the time of their first marriages. Norma was recorded as having been born in Missouri and her parents in Illinois. Elizabeth was recorded as having been born in the District of Columbia. Joe’s occupation was recorded as Commercial Agent for the railroad.

From a 31 Aug 1972 letter written by Dr. Robert William Webb (one of Joe Bewley’s nephews): “Mr. Joe Bewley is the one member of the family about whim I know the least. He visited our Anderson home briefly in the 1900’s, when I was a boy about 10 years of age, but I remember him well to this day. He was tall, attractive, even handsome, dark hair and brown eyes, with a wonderful smile. He worked for many years, I believe, in various railroad offices in the state of Georgia and maybe South Carolina. Many years later, I heard that he had gone to New York State to work in some kind of railroad business. I think that either Aunt Seppie or Uncle Will, sometime and somewhere, told me that he had developed a serious ailment, diabetes or large blood clot, which required amputation of one leg.”

Dr. Webb’s letter went on: “I have written you an unpardonably long and rambling letter, in an effort to reveal the story, as I know it, on the Bewleys to let you know what FINE people and characters I consider my mother (Kate), Aunt Seppie, Uncle Will, Aunt Ida, and Uncle Joe to have been.”

And, from the earlier letter, written 15 Aug 1972 by Dr. Webb: “Now, as to what I know about the immediate Bewley off-springs resulting from the marriage of James H. Bewley and Jennie McCord. They all possessed beautiful dark brown hair and eyes, notable features, and were attractive people indeed.”
