Known as Minnie was born 19 October 1859, in Palmyra, Fluvanna County, Virginia, to Henry Peyton Tutwiler and Martha Howard (Spencer) Tutwiler. She was sent to live with her maternal grandparents Henry Spencer and Parmelia (Howard) Spencer in Boston, Massachesetts. While there she was employed at a shoe factory where she met her first husband George Washington Jones. They were married on 27 May 1885, Haverhill, Massachusetts. They moved to the Le Mars, Iowa area for George's health where they farmed the Winslow farm. Their first son died at birth and their second son Howard George was born in 1894. George preceded her in death on 20 July 1900. She moved with their son (Howard) to Edgerton, Minnesota, where she hired Simon Aukema, Jr. to work on the farm. Simon asked for her hand in marriage, but she sent him away for one year and told him to return after that time if he still wanted to marry. They were married about January 1903.
