Gary is the son of Joyce and Francis Beaufort Hansen. He graduated from Missouri Western State College. He married Elizabeth Wood on April 18, 1981. Gary and Elizabeth resided in Omaha, Sarpy County, Nebraska for 26 years. Gary has three children, a son - Corey; a daughter - Bree; and a daughter - Ryley. He also has a foster daughter, Amanda Blancett. With his wife by his side, Gary lost his battle to cancer the morning of Bree's 19th birthday. He made no written or verbal request for his burial. His wife, along with his children, arranged for the majority of his ashes to be buried with his father's ashes at his boyhood home in Buchanan County, Missouri, until permanent decisions were made. His daughters and wife carried a small portion of his ashes on a cruise to Nassau, Bahamas in June 2009 - returning to one honeymoon destination that he and his wife visited in 1982. His wife and daughters built a sand castle on a Nassau beach, performed a little ceremony and spinkled the ashes at the gate of the castle. In March, 2011, a few more of Gary's ashes traveled with his wife to Isla Rotan, Cozumel and Grand Cayman.

Gary is the grandson of Harvey Vidal and Gladys Mae (Robertson) Brockett; and Henry Vincent and Margaret D. (Beaufort) Hansen.
