Portsmouth - Gloria Debnam-Smith, 72, of Portsmouth, VA, departed this life on January 7, 2014 at home. A native of Raleigh, NC, Gloria was the daughter of the late Rev. Leotha and Naomi Chavis Debnam. She was a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University and received her Masters degree from Old Dominion University. Gloria was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Deeply committed to early childhood development, Gloria taught for 33 years in the Portsmouth Public School system.
She is survived by her loving husband, Rev. William T. Smith; daughters Sherri Pittman, of Oakland, CA, Phyllis Holley, Pam Smith Barnard (Charles), Amy Johnson (Henry) of Tampa, Fl;. a brother, Leotha Debnam, Jr (Angie) of Winston-Salem, NC; Emily Debnam Ferrel (Timothy) of Winston-Salem, NC and Stephanie Debnam of Raleigh, NC. Countless grandchildren, beloved pets Taco the Chihuahua and kitty George and a host of relatives and friends.
A wake will be held this Friday January 10, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Corprew Funeral Home. Funeral services will he held Saturday January 11, 12 noon at Lea Funeral Home in Raleigh, NC.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
