Laura was the eldest daughter of Henry L. and Evaline (York) Jones of Black Township, Posey County, Indiana and was born around 1862. She had two younger sisters: Elizabeth "Lizzie" and Mary. The first few years of Laura life was spent on the family farm located north of the town of Mount Vernon. By 1870 her father moved the family to Carmi, White County, Illinois. This town is just fifteen miles west across the Wabash River from Mount Vernon. It was here that Henry tried his hand as a butcher. Evidentally not happy with this line of work, he once again moved the family back to Black Township, Posey County by 1880 and again took up farming. The exact date of Laura's marriage to William L. Barton has not been identified, but it was prior to 1900. William was born in September of 1864 in Indiana. There is no evidence that the couple had children. Laura passed away on April 19, 1900 in Mount Vernon, Indiana. The U S Census of that year, which is usually taken in the summer, reports that her husband William was a widower, thirty-five years of age, and living in the town of Mount Vernon. His occupation was listed as a Teamster. Living at his home included Laura's mother, Evaline Jones (57) and Eva Kelley (a boarder, 25). Her mother, herself a widow, appears to have been living with Laura and William since her husband Henry had died in January of 1900. How sad it must have been for her to lose her husband in January and then lose her daughter the following April. It is not known where Laura is interred, but most likely she is buried in a Posey County cemetery located near Mount Vernon, Indiana.
