Robert was the son of Joseph Allen and Hepsibeth Coffin. He was married in Shutesbury, Mass. on 12 May 1787 to Rhoda Cady, the daughter of Samuel Cady and Elizabeth Winter of Killingly, Connecticut and Shutesbury. In 1806 the family moved from Shutesbury to Wallingford, Vermont, where they cleared the wilderness for a farm. Robert became a successful cattle trader, and profitted from his business. He, his wife, and several of their children became members of the East Wallingford Baptist Church. Robert and Rhoda had eight children.
