Cancer Takes Life Of Young Farmer
Mr. Paul Altena, 29, passed away at the Doornink hospital at Orange City on Friday, July 6, 1945 alter a long and serious illness due to cancer.
He leaves to mourn his early departure his wife, and two small sons Syne Dwaine who is four years old and Alden Dale who is two years old. Also his mother Mrs Ella Altena and three brothers Sam Altena of Sheldon, Cpl. Elmer Altena stationed in Germany, and T/5 Julius Altena in France, and two sisters. Jeanette (Mrs Neal Van Essen) of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Ina at home, and also his aged grandfather, Mr Sam Altena.
Paul was born on a farm near Sioux Center on July 15, 1915 and lived in this community all of his life. On August, 1, 1940 he was united.in marriage to Miss Margaret Sybesma and they started farming northwest of Sioux Center where they made their home until a few months ago when he was taken to the home of his mother due to his illness and then to the Orange City hospital. In Dec. 1943 he went to Rochester, Minn for an operation.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon, July 9, at the First Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Oliver Breen officiating. Burial took place at the local cemetery and six of his brothers were the pallbearers: Syne, Clarence, Dave and William and John Sybesma and Sam Altena.
