Mitchel Thomas Benoit was raised by his step father Thomas Robert “Buddy” Reed and mother Elizabeth Reed in Louisiana and east Texas. When Elizabeth Young married Buddy in 1899, she already had two children—Mitchel Benoit and Mary Adeline Daniels (1895 Vinton, Louisiana—1970 Harris County, Texas). Buddy and Elizabeth had five more children between 1900 and 1910. By 1920, they lived in Morgan’s Point. Elizabeth died there in 1920 and was buried in Hardin County. Mitchel’s natural father was listed on his death certificate as Edgar Benoit of Vinton, Louisiana. Mitchel attended grammar school and then joined the Army. In 1919 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served three years as a private first class in the Third Infantry. He was stationed in Louisiana and then at Fort William McKinley in the Philippines.

Mitchel married Julia Carrie Hall (1904 Harris County,Texas —1980 California) of Morgan’s Point in 1923. Her father was a Texas coast fisherman born in Vermont. In the 1930 Census, Mitchel Thomas Benoit lived with his wife Julia and their young son William Clarence (1923—1996) on “Galveston Road’ in Harris County Precinct 2, which included Morgan’s Point. He worked that year as a rig builder in the oil fields though later identified himself as a pipe fitter. In the 1940 Census, Mitchel and his wife Julia were divorced, and Julia lived with her parents William and Sarah Hall in Morgan’s Point. Her son William Clarence lived with them. Julia remarried Clifton Leroy Goleman, and later moved to California. There is a 1942 marriage record for Mitchel and Mary Ruth Brown; on his death certificate, he was listed as married.
