Annie L. Abel

Annie Lou Abel, LLB from Jackson, died Saturday, February 5, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, Mississippi. Mrs. Abel had been confined to the bed since suffering a diabetic neuropathy in her right leg since 1996. She lived with her daughter and son-in-law from that time until 2007 when she moved into a nursing home. Her death was due to complications from a three week illness.

She was the daughter of Earl and Olive Turnage from Jefferson County, Mississippi. She was born November 8, 1925 and was pre-deceased by two brothers, Ralph and Wilburt Turnage. Mrs. Abel was the wife of Robert J. Abel, deceased, of Jackson. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Miller, and son-in-law, H. B. Miller: by one grandson, Alex Miller, and his wife, Rebecca Miller of Philadelphia, Pa., and by two great-granddaughters, Anya Klair Miller and Fione Kennedy Miller. She also leaves two sisters-in-laws and many nieces and nephews.

Annie Lou Able was one of the first women graduating from the Jackson School of Law. She attended classed at night while holding a full time job. She became one of the partners of the firm of one of her teachers, Rufusb Creekmore. After an illness she became the legal assistant of Natie Carraway, and worked on the Liberty Mutual Asbestos cases.

She became a champion for Legal Assistants gaining the respect they deserved. She was one of the founding members and first president of the Mississippi Chapter of Legal Assistants. Later she joined the firm of Saunders, Abel, and Fortenberry. However, soon thereafter, she was widowed and struck by disease the same year.

Graveside services for Mrs. Abel will be held Tuesday, February 8, 2011, at 3:00 PM at Lakewood Memorial Park in Clinton, where she will lie next to her husband, Robert.
