William was the oldest of two sons born to Margret Blackburn before her marriage. He stayed with his grandparents when Margaret married Andrew Robson. John J. joined his mother and new husband.

By 1871, William had joined some of Margaret's brothers when they moved to the Whitehaven area.

William was only 19 when he died in Harrington which is north along the coast of the Irish Sea from Whitehaaven where his death was registered. William is buried in Gilcrux with his grandfather.
