Ben and a brother opened a store in nearby Wartrace, a few years after the Civil War. The brick store has changed hands many times, and is still standing.
Ben was married twice. His first wife was Susan Catherine "Kittie" Scruggs. Kittie died in 1875. His second wife was Margaret Anita Jennings, whom he married on February 3, 1876, in Bedford County, TN.
Ben died at the very young age of 36. The 1880 census gave his occupation as "retired merchant," and he died only a year after that. Information within the family indicates that he died of heart problems.
Maggie and Ben Davis had four children:
Frances Eudora "Dora" (1876 - 1965)
Benjamin Franklin (1878 - 1943)
Gertrude (about 1879-80; died at birth)
Sarah Blanche (1881 - 1969)
The poem on Ben's grave marker was written by his wife, Maggie.

Inscription
My Husband
Benj. F. Davis
Born July 5, 1845
Died Aug. 15, 1881
Farewell dear husband for a little while,
Though earth be dark without thy smile,
We are nearing the morn of endless day,
Where God shall wipe all tears away.
How sweet on Heaven's ever-blooming shore
Where the breath of time can fade no more,
All free from sorrow, care and pain,
To meet the loved and lost again.
