YOUNGSTOWN-George Backur, 88, of the city's westside, passed away Friday afternoon, June 4, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.
George was born May 7, 1922, in Youngstown, a son of the late Anthony and Anna Luczejko Backur, and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Backur served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II, and worked for the Aeroquip Division of Republic Rubber for 36 years, retiring in 1982 as a braider operator.
George was a member of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Austintown.
George's wife, Irene Matty Backur, whom he married Oct. 31, 1964, passed away Feb. 17, 1994.
He leaves a brother, Andrew Backur of Girard; two nephews; seven nieces; nine great-nephews; and seven great-nieces.
Besides his wife, two brothers, James and John Backur and two sisters, Rose Kusnic and Mary Kellman-Moraghan, are deceased.
Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, June 7, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown, where a prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m.
Funeral services will begin at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home, and continue at 10 a.m. at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, where George will be laid to rest next to his wife.
