Harold A. Backhaus, 86, of West Bend passed away on Thursday, Dec. 13, 20012, at Ivy Manor I while on hospice care.
He was born in New Fane on April 5, 1926, son of Frances and George, and on Jan. 15, 1947, was united in marriage to Frieda (Tootie) Cash at St. Michael's Catholic Church in St. Michaels.
Harold was an active member of St. Michael's Catholic Church where he served on the Human Concerns Committee, was president of St. Vincent de Paul, a member of the Knights of Columbus and caretaker of the St. Michael's Cemetery.
Harold and Tootie ran the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry from their home for many years. Harold especially enjoyed organic gardening and had a stand at the West Bend Farmers Market for many years.
Survivors include eight children, James (Jean) Backhuas of Mt. Calvary, Gary (Fran) Backhaus, Ronald (Rita) Backhaus, and Geralyn Kaehny, all of West Bend, John Backhaus of Menomonie Darlene Backhaus of Oklahoma, Linda (Lloyd) Bunkelman of Campbellsport, and Scott (Tina) Backhaus of Muskego; a sister Marlene Schaefer of Cedarburg; 14 grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Harold was preceded in death by a son, David, in 1968, sister Joanne Zautner, brother Gerald, brother-inlaw Charles Schaefer, sisterin- law Shirley (Weber) Backhaus, and parents.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, at St. Michael's Church. The Rev. Ed Kornath will officiate and burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation at the church from 11 a.m. until time of service.
