Murdered prior to indictment or trial by a known and well-organized mob while in the Belton County Jail.

Married by a Circuit Minister on 15 Mar 1874 to Cansady McDonald. One child born, a daughter, Frances Rose Cowan was born 19 Jan 1872 in Texas. It would appear William Cowan was known to the McDonald family since about 1871

No family has ever been found for William so we are not sure of the spelling of his name. His daughter seems to have spelled her maiden name "Cowan". Even his date of birth is approximated. Cowin is a spelling also known.

Most records of the Belton Jail Massacre and published works refer to his name as being "Cowen".
