Birth: unknown
Death: Sep. 2, 1862
Renville County
Minnesota, USA

Joseph C. Dickinson was working at the Lower Sioux Agency when the Dakota, or Sioux Indians attacked it on August 18, 1862. It was the first day of the Dakota's Uprising, prompted by a variety of frustrations with their situation. Joseph managed to escape to Fort Ridgely with his wife, Emily and their two children, but his brother, Lathrop, who was also working at the Lower Sioux Agency, was killed by the Dakota. From Fort Ridgely, Joseph continued on to St. Peter, bringing word of the Uprising. He then returned to Fort Ridgely, and was there with his family during the Dakota's two attacks, on August 20 and 22, 1862. On August 31, he accompanied the Joseph R. Brown burial party, which buried Uprising victims in Renville County and at the Lower Sioux Agency. Joseph likely went with the party to find the remains of his brother Lathrop. The burial party camped at Birch Coulee the night of September 1, and were attacked there by the Dakota just before daybreak on September 2. Joseph was among those who were killed. He shares a gravestone with his brother Lathrop. Joseph's story is related on page 28 of "Dakota Uprising Victims: Gravestones & Stories," published by Curtis Dahlin in 2007. The inscription on Joseph and Lathrop's gravestone reads "J. C. --- L. H. and E. S. Dickinson, Children of A. & Maria Dickinson, and Clara, Grand Daughter."
