EFFINGHAM -- Darwyn W. "Doc" Acheson, 83, Effingham, died Monday, July 17, 2000, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Acheson was a farmer and stockman. He also worked at the former Wilson Hawk Livestock Auction, Effingham, and the Estes Atchison County Livestock Auction for a total of 27 years. He served in the Army 31st Signal Corp. during World War II.
He was born Nov. 23, 1916, on a farm southwest of Effingham, the son of John Raymond and Elizabeth May Piper Acheson. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School, where he was a charter member of the FFA Chapter.
Mr. Acheson was a former member of the Effingham Union Church, the Lancaster Saddle Club, Jackson-Farmers Co-op Association, and the Atchison County Farm Bureau. He served on the Maple Grove School Board, the Benton Township Volunteer Fire Department and the Road Township Board. He was a 52-year member and past commander of the Gibson-McFarland Post No. 28 of the American Legion, and Fleming-Jackson-Seever Post No. 6 of the American Legion. He also served as second vice-commander and on the community services committee.
Mr. Acheson helped with the Legions Bingo for more than 22 years, and he contributed more than 750 hours of volunteer service to the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Leavenworth. He received the Liberty Bell Award from the Lawyers Club, and he was instrumental in starting the Atchison County Fair Parade.
He married Elva Eileen Gontz on Jan. 15, 1946, in Effingham. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Raymond Acheson, Effingham; three daughters, Leota Flory and Elva Wilson, both of Atchison, and Nancy Kleopper, Lancaster; six grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Effingham Union Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Acheson will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at O'Trimble Funeral Home in Effingham, where visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. He will lie in state at the church one hour before service time Thursday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Darwyn W. Acheson Memorial Fund, to be used for community projects, and sent in care of the funeral home.
