Ela was born in Warren Co. Tennessee on July 1, 1828, the son of James Mitchell and Martha McGregor. He married first a Shipley and moved to Washington Co. Ill, by 1850 and later to Bell Co. Texas. His first wife died near Berryville AR around 1870 and he moved to Bell Co. TX where he md. Cyntha (Morton) Hurt in Feb 1875 in Bell Co. He had children from both marriages, and he died from injuries resulting from a tornado that struck his house on April 27, 1883 near Midway, Bell Co. TX. He is thought to have been buried in an unmarked grave in the Midway Cemetery, Bell Co. TX.
