John V. Farthing was born about 1817 in Kentucky, just a few years after the War of 1812.

When he was a young man of about twenty-five years of age, John V. Farthing married Martha Ann Farthing, who was a distant cousin.
They were married on 27 January 1842, in Robertson County, Tennessee. The marriage was solemnized by Rev. Thomas Gunn, Minister of the Gospel. A record of their marriage from 1842 is preserved at the Robertson County Courthouse in Tennessee.
While primarily a farmer, John V. Farthing was also appointed road overseer for a section of his road in Logan County, Kentucky. This record was preserved in Court Order Book # 11 on Page 357 in Logan County, Kentucky, record books.
