A fair amount of confusing information exists on John Bussard's birth and parentage. John's tombstone has inscribed 1851 as his year of birth. However, various census records place his birth as occurring anywhere from 1848 to 1851. All records indicate he was born in Illinois, with one online family tree indicating that "John Henry Bussard," the husband of Nancy Jane Tanquary (married November 10, 1872), was born on May 30, 1849 in Sparland, Marshall County, Illinois, the son of Ezra V. Bussard (a native of Maryland) and Elizabeth Kennedy (a native of Illinois). This is contrary to the 1880, 1900, and 1910 census records which list both of John Bussard's parents as being born in Germany. The 1850 Census, enumerated in Crawford County, Illinois in November 1850 shows John Bussard as a 5 month-old infant, placing his date of birth in April/May 1850. The 1900 census lists his birth as taking place in May 1849. John appears to have grown up on farms in Crawford County (1850, 1860) and Marion County (1870), Illinois.

In any case, by the time of the 1880 John Bussard and his wife Nancy J. (Tanquary) could be found farming in the township of Fayette, Livingston County, Illinois with their three oldest children. Over the course of 20 years, John and Nancy Bussard are recorded to have had 7 children (Charles Isaac, Angeline Lucinda, Henry L., Ida Mae, Grover Cleveland, Oliva A., and Pearl Bussard. By the time of the 1900 census, both Henry and Pearl Bussard had passed away. In 1900 John Bussard was working as the Village Marshall in Strawn, Fayette Township, Livingston County, Illinois. In 1910, the 60 year-old John Bussard was working as a laborer of odd jobs and living in Strawn, Illinois with his wife Nancy, children Grover, Ida, and Olive, and his brother-in-law William Tanquary. John Bussard is listed as passing away on October 13, 1916. He is buried beside his wife Nancy in the Strawn (Illinois) Cemetery.
