Mary Ann Grubaugh was born in 1816 to Michael Grubaugh (1792) and his first wife, Catherine ??. She was the only child born to these parents, but Michael remarried several times and had many more children. The birth year of Mary Ann is given by some sources (including her death certificate and obituary) as 1811, but the dates of birth of her first and last children (1838 and 1861) suggest a later birth date. Similarly, although the obituary says that she was married to Daniel Cameron in 1829, the Richland County marriage records give the marriage date as 19 Apr 1938. That date also makes more sense than assuming she and Daniel waited 9 years to have their first of 11 children. Although not definitive, the 1830 census states that she was 10-15 years old in 1830. Other census results provide the following birth years: 1850 (25 yr old/born in 1825), 1860 (48/1812), 1870 (52/1818), 1880 (65/1815), 1900 (88/1812).
Daniel and Mary moved from Ashland County, OH to Fayette County, IL in the mid-1850s, stopping in Indiana long enough to have one child in Noble County, IN. Their 11 children were: Levi Taylor Cameron (1838-1875), Sarah Catherine Cameron Myers (1839-1924), Joseph Cameron (1840-1914), Edward D. Cameron (1842-1901), Michael Cameron (1844-1863 - died at Chickamauga in Civil War), Daniel Cameron (1846-1914), Catherine Ann Cameron Van Gundy (1852-1937), Mary Elizabeth Cameron Grubaugh (1855-1941), Henry L. Cameron (1856-1939), Thomas Clifton Cameron (1860-1934), George Riley Cameron (1861-1935).
Daniel died in 1875 but Mary never remarried. She died in 1910.
Here is her obituary:
Obituary of Mary Grubaugh Cameron
(Altamont News, Thursday, 10 Mar 1910 per Jeff Lilly)
Mary A. Grubaugh was born in Knox County, Ohio, December 25, 1811. She was married to Daniel Cameron in 1829 and to this union were born 13 children, ten boys and three girls. In 1851 the family moved from Ohio to Indiana and two years later they came to Illinois, making Fayette County their home. Mr. Cameron died in 1875.
Grandma Cameron united with the church in early life and lived as a true and devoted Christian should live. She was a loving wife, an affectionate mother, a good neighbor and was loved and esteemed by all who knew her.
One of her sons is in the North and two in the West. She was very anxious to see and talk with them once more while on earth, but when the privilege could not be granted, she left them in the hands of God and breathed her last. Mrs. Cameron leaves five sons and three daughters, fifty-four grandchildren, one hundred eight great grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her departure.
For several years Mrs. Cameron lived with her three youngest sons, but for the last sixteen years she has made her home with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Mary Grubaugh. She died at the ripe age of ninety-nine years, two months, and five days.
Funeral services were conducted from Mt. Moriah Church on Friday forenoon by Rev. Whitesides of St. Elmo, assisted by Rev. Wilton and Rev. Davis after which the form was gently laid to rest in the church cemetery.
