JESSE COX

Jesse Cox, one of the early settlers of this county, died very suddenly last Friday afternoon near his farm some seven miles north of Warrensburg. He was seventy eight years of age but was still very stout and active. He often walked about the neighborhood and Friday was out as usual. He stopped at the Francis Taggart home a got a drink of water. Mr. Taggart asked him if he would not stop for a while, but Mr. Cox said he guessed he had better be gone. The next seen of him was a while afterwards when Mr. Taggart found him dead in the road. As he had been enjoying good health his death was evidently caused by the extreme heat.

Jesse Cox was born May 2, 1829 in Lafayette county on a farm on which the town of Concordia is now located. He lived on his fathers farm during boyhood. He was married to Isabell Marshall, February 23, 1855. He moved to Johnson County and purchased a farm in Hazil Hill Township on which he lived fifty three years. He was the father of twelve children, eight of whom are living as follows: James of Butler, Rachel McCall of Rassie, Missouri, R.H. of Idaho, Alice Mills of North Dakota, Rebecca and Jesse, the later two and his wife being present at his funeral. He was 78 years, 3 months and 7 days at the time of his death. He will be greatly missed at home.
