Sidney Austin was a seaman. After retiring from the sea, he moved to Massachusetts and became a worker in a shoe factory. Apparently, many of the skills associated with mending sails were easily transferred to stitching shoes.
He eventually entered Sailor's Snug Harbor, an "old sailors" home which was at that time on Staten Island in New York. He died there and was shipped home to Maine for burial.
