Mary Catherine Paden was born on December 31st, 1829 in Middletown, Frederick, Maryland, as the eighth child of Alexander Paden and Anna Maria Remsburg. She had nine siblings, namely: Sarah J, Rebecca, Asa A, Adeline V, Sophia, Ann M, John R, Jonah Josiah, and James Lewis.
When she was 20, She married George Washington Black, son of Samuel Black and Rebecca Skinner, on April 18th, 1850 in Sandusky County, Ohio. They continued to live in Sandusky Count and on July 7th, 1853, Mary Catherine gave birth to their first son, George Franklin Black.
In the mid 1850s, their small family moved to Porter, Cass County, Michigan. At age 26, she and George had their second son, George William Foster Black on August 30th, 1856.
In 1865, the family moved again; this time to Limerick, Bureau County, Illinois. After losing her husband in 1888, Mary Catherine continued to live in Bureau County until her death in 1900 at age 70. She was buried in the Walnut Cemetery, next to her husband.
